Do you believe your vote counts?

What a strange question for a health blog, huh?

Go with me on this for a moment.

I could be wrong, but I actually think you don't believe that your vote counts.

You might be thinking, "Uh, Robin. I am ALL about the importance of voting. My ballot was in way before election day. I know my vote counts."

GOOD!!

I'm so glad to hear that.

I'm actually talking about your vote for yourself. Or votes, rather.

In this crazy, polarized political climate people are die-hard about giving their vote to a certain candidate, but when it comes to voting for their own well being, there is apathy, resistance, and even fear.

It's easy to place hope and expectation in someone outside of ourselves, especially when they are promising to support us in the things that matter most to us.

At the same time, it's extremely important for us to remember the power we have within ourselves to bring about the changes we want to see on a daily basis.

And yes, now I'm talking about health.

What you choose to eat, where you choose to buy your food, and whether or not you make time to exercise and cook dramatically impacts your health and your future.

I'd argue that the "votes" you make for your health on a daily basis have a greater implication for your experience of the future than anything else.

The thing is, my encouragements to eat well and exercise fall to the ground every time I say them unless you...

  • see the way your energy, your chances of disease, your mental health, the health of your family and friends, and your overall experience of life are directly connected to your daily choices

  • value your life and your impact in this world to justify the time and effort it takes to create sustainable healthy habits

  • view your daily choices as votes for or against your long term health

Feeling inspired to get your votes in?!

Here are a couple of "votes" you can make today:

  • Drink half your body weight in ounces of water

  • Cook a healthy dinner

  • Commit to 7+ hours of sleep

Sound too easy?

What's easy to do is also easy not to do. That's why so many of us aren't consistent.
